<image:caption>“In no other capacity is a problem solved by not talking about it,” says Ibram Kendi. “And yes, it’s extremely hard to treat racism. It’s extremely painful. Just like it’s extremely hard to treat cancer.” Our hope is that the Franklin public would have a safe space to ask the hard, painful questions about race, and leave with an empathy for otherness, a perspective they’ve never heard before, and a passion for social change.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A statue in the center of town. A high school mascot. A flag on the county seal. All current signs of a Franklin that has not yet been liberated from the evils of its past. Our history points to broken systems, miseducation, and an abuse of position, power, and prosperity. At The Public, we believe the culprit is ignorance. We believe that education and conversation are our weapons against it. Join us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Education.</image:title>
<image:caption>Lack of knowledge about our local and national history allows for racial brokenness to cultivate under the surface and in broad daylight in this Post-Civil Rights Era. Additionally, without direct, personal experiences witnessing racism in our community, people are unlikely to change through education alone. The Public invites Franklin residents and their friends to hear stories, learn how our racial history continues to invade the Franklin community today, and act in ways that challenge racial and economic disparities in order to make our town a more loving community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - ANTHONY HENDRICKS Co-Founder & Director</image:title>
<image:caption>Anthony Hendricks’ drive, passion, love for humanity, and analytical mind has helped him serve high-paced, innovative, strategically positioned ministries over the past 25 years. Following his career in the corporate space, he entered full-time ministry as the Assistant Pastor at a local Church in Franklin, TN where he helped build a thriving multi-ethnic body. He has helped other multi-ethnic ministries grow and thrive in other cities. The world of racial reconciliation became his calling, and he’s been engaging Christ-followers and non-Christ followers in honest conversation and action around the issues of race and justice. Since 2001, God has allowed him to teach seminars and speak about these issues at Universities, Churches, Schools, and businesses. He and his friend Brad Perry founded THEPUBLIC in 2019 in an effort to educate the Franklin community on issues of race, justice and anti-racism. He currently serves as the chairman of the board of THEPUBLIC. Anthony, his wife Carla, and their four children currently reside in Franklin, TN. Anthony holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, where he graduated with honors, and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership (summa cum laude), from Williamson College.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"[The Public’s] goal is to provide a safe place to have conversations on race in order to help educate and foster racial unity," Hendricks wrote on the group's Facebook page Saturday. "The one overarching theme that we kept realizing is that being non-racist is not enough. We have to be anti-racist which, means actively working against systemic racism in our hearts, our homes, our town and in our nation. <image:caption>The Public does not wish to reinvent the wheel. Many people and organizations before us have been doing the hard work of community development, racial unity, and public health. We hope that we can point others to these amazing resources in our community! Black Lives Matter Franklin Empty Hands Fellowship Franklin Justice and Equity Coalition Franklin Teens for Justice Hard Bargain Association Mercy Children's Clinic Michael Card New Hope Academy One WillCo Students for Black Empowerment The Fuller Story A Fuller Story, founded by two Black pastors (Rev. Hewitt Sawyers and Rev. Chris Williamson) and two White leaders in Franklin (Rev. Kevin Riggs and Historian Eric Jacobson) decided to work together along with Franklin’s mayor and administrators in an effort to build unity in Franklin. Our goal was to provide proactive solutions on the national controversy surrounding Confederate monuments. We decided that our efforts would focus on what could be put up as opposed to what could be taken down. We also believed strongly that local churches in our community should lead the way in this initiative. The Red Road The Red Road exists to empower and minister hope to Native communities. We challenge each other on a daily basis to live by traditional values, thus honoring our culture and those who have died to protect these principles. We also strive to raise awareness and educate the public about the extensive history and current condition of the Native American culture, reshaping perceptions of our often misunderstood people. The Refuge Center The Refuge Center for Counseling seeks to empower, educate and support individuals, couples and families in need. Williamson Social Justice Alliance (WSJA) WSJA supports our community by standing for justice and the marginalized, in action rather than remaining silent on the sidelines. We hope to be a part of erasing the margins and be allies of those treated unjustly or those simply needing support. We take the idea of social justice very seriously, in that we hope to live out the belief that we are ALL equal and therefore deserve equal rights and footing.</image:caption>
